Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- ¾ cup cold buttermilk (or milk with 1 teaspoon vinegar)
- 2 tablespoons melted butter for brushing
Optional Add-Ins:
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives or parsley
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Cut in Butter: Add the cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Buttermilk: Gradually pour in the buttermilk, stirring gently until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
- Shape Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Pat or roll it into a 1-inch-thick rectangle. Fold the dough in thirds (like a letter) and pat it out again. Repeat this process 2–3 times to create layers.
- Cut Biscuits: Use a biscuit cutter or a round glass to cut biscuits. Press straight down without twisting for even rising. Gather the scraps and repeat to use all the dough.
- Bake Biscuits: Arrange the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, slightly touching for softer edges or spaced apart for crispier edges. Brush the tops with melted butter.
- Bake: Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve: Brush with more melted butter after baking and serve warm.
Notes
- Keep ingredients cold: Cold butter and buttermilk are key to achieving flaky biscuits.
- Don’t overmix: Mix the dough just until combined to avoid tough biscuits.
