2 cups all-purpose flour

1½ teaspoons baking soda

1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ teaspoon ground cloves

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup packed light brown sugar

2 large eggs

1½ cups unsweetened applesauce

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

½ cup raisins (optional)

For the Frosting:

 

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter, softened

2 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract


Instructions

Prepare the Cake:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Mix in the applesauce and vanilla extract until well combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  7. Fold in the chopped nuts and raisins, if using.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Remove from the oven and allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.

Prepare the Frosting:

In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy.

Gradually add the powdered sugar and ground cinnamon, beating until well combined and fluffy.

Mix in the vanilla extract until incorporated.

Assemble the Cake:

Once the cake has cooled completely, spread the cinnamon cream cheese frosting evenly over the top.
