Description

Soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet Amish White Bread, perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying with butter and jam. A simple homemade bread recipe for beginners!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  • Stir in salt and vegetable oil. Gradually mix in the flour, one cup at a time, until the dough comes together.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and divide into two equal portions. Shape each into a loaf and place into greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
  • Cover and let the dough rise for 30-40 minutes, until it reaches the top of the pans.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.
  • Remove from pans and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • Use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour for a slightly chewier texture.
  • Store bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
  • Brush the tops with melted butter after baking for extra softness.
  • Great for sandwiches, French toast, or simply with jam and butter!
