This hearty Amish Hamburger Steak Bake layers tender beef patties, creamy mashed potatoes, and rich mushroom gravy for a comforting family dinner favorite.

For the Hamburger Patties:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt & pepper to taste
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 4 medium potatoes, peeled & cubed
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup milk
- Salt & pepper to taste
For the Gravy:
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Set to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare Patties: Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4–6 patties.
- Brown Patties: Sear in a skillet over medium heat on both sides. They don’t need to be fully cooked. Set aside.
- Make Mashed Potatoes: Boil potatoes in salted water for 15–20 minutes until tender. Drain, then mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Assemble Casserole: Spread half of the mashed potatoes in the dish. Place patties on top. Mix condensed soup with milk and pour over patties. Spread remaining mashed potatoes over the top. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese if using.
- Bake: Bake for 25–30 minutes until bubbly and cheese is golden.
- Serve: Let cool slightly before serving.

- Use ground turkey for a lighter version.
- Add sautéed mushrooms for extra depth.
